R.S.I. Resources at UN-L

• The excellent book Repetitive Strain Injury: A Computer User's Guide by Dr. Emil Pascarelli & Deborah Quilter is available in the Lincoln City Libraries and will soon be in the UN-L Library system as well. I bought my copy at Nebraska Book.

• Rosemarie Atencio generously donated to UN-L Libraries a copy each of her excellent books : Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: How to Relieve & Prevent Wrist "Burnout!" and Shoulders, Upper Back, & Neck: Free Yourself from PAIN! These should be available on the shelves soon, by all means read them.

• UN-L Computing Resource Center is considering offering training in ergonomic computer use and avoiding RSI. Watch for sessions to be advertised.

• I asked physical therapist Jane Austin (jaa@unlinfo.unl.edu) at the University Health Center whether they handle typing RSIs, and she responded that they are knowledgable in the diagnosis and treatment of these conditions and can provide therapy.

• The UN-L Industrial Engineering Department faculty does research in this area, and I.E. graduate students do ergonomic evaluations of UN-L faculty and staff computer users and their equipment. If you would like to check into having this done, contact department chairman Dr. Michael Riley at 472-3495. (mriley@unl.edu)

• UN-L's Environmental Health and Safety department tells me:

  "The University Health Center no longer provides Occupational Medicine Services
  and they do not have staff that will do a field evaluation of employees work
  station.  Employees with concerns about an RSI should contact Environmental
  Health and Safety at 472-4925.  We can provide or arrange an evaluation of their
  work area, and we can provide them information on options for seeking medical
  care.  The University Health Center will provide physical therapy to employees
  with a physician referral.
  
  Another resource you might want to note on your web page is the Accommodation
  Resource Center (ARC) at 125 Mabel Lee Hall.  They have a variety of alternative
  computer equipment that employees can check out and test before purchasing.
  Examples include different types of mouses, keyboards, wrist rests, back
  supports, neck supports, etc.  Christy Horn is the director and Karen Ketelhut
  is the contact for information about checking out the equipment.  The ARC phone
  number is 472-5852."
