You aren't stuck with whatever chin rest was installed on the violin: they are easily swapped out and come in a great variety of shapes and configurations, and it makes a huge difference in how easy it is to support the violin. Find a music store with a repair shop, go down with daughter and violin and ask to try out several until you find one that feels best. Likewise, experimenting with the variety of shoulder rests to find one that minimizes effort is worth your time ... be sure to try out one of those simple ones that are basically just a wedge-shaped, contoured chunk of foam ("Zaret" is one brand) , they aren't just for kids, they really make a violin stick to your shoulder. (Cheap too!) Sure, there are technique/posture/etc. issues that may need attention - my daughter is still correcting these with both her string prof and a physical therapist at college (yeah, she got hurt just like me), but just like getting your computer equipment ergonomic, musical instruments need to be dialed in to individuals as much as humanly possible.
