I'm a 36-year-old amateur oboe player, and have solved a problem that I had with wrist pain. The weight of the instrument is held by the right thumb, and the thumb tendon is stretched in the wrist, causing a nagging general pain in the wrist even when the musician is not playing. I have noticed that wrist pain is a common problem among woodwind players. And if you don't do anything about it the pain can eventually get very bad. The condition is solved (if you don't wait too long) by a simple elastic neck strap. I bought mine (actually made for clarinet) from a music store in Kansas City called Luyben Music (816) 753-7111. It's very cheap and does not get in the way of playing. I would be very interested to know if this helps someone.
