I ring the low bells, the heaviest (ours are Whitechapels) being about 15 pounds. The hazards for tendonitis are in the wrists. But because I've worn wrist supports for years while ringing, I've been spared this ailment. These supports are elastic and can be obtained at your local drug store. There are also elbow supports, etc. One of my co-bass ringers also uses gloves from a sporting goods store to give her a better grip on the handle. Obviously, this latter solution would not work for string players, but perhaps some kind of wrist support might help.
